Bush Reflects on Solid Foundation of U.S.-China Relations

Washington -- The new U.S. Embassy complex in Beijing reflects the solid foundation underpinning U.S.-Chinese relations, President Bush says, and "is a commitment to strengthen that foundation for years to come."

The $434 million, eight-story embassy is the second largest U.S. diplomatic post in the world after the new compound in Baghdad.  The 500,000-square-foot (46,000-square-meter) structure is situated on 10 acres (four hectares) in the new diplomatic zone and is enclosed in free-standing, transparent and opaque glass.  It was designed with traditional Chinese elements that include narrow walkways lined with bamboo that link diplomatic "neighborhoods." >>Full text

WELCOMING REMARKS AND TOAST

CONSUL GENERAL STEPHEN B. WICKMAN
INDEPENDENCE DAY RECEPTION -- JUNE 30, 2008

U.S. Olympic boxing team member Demetrius Andrade poses for photographers after a training session in New York July 11.

Honorable Governor Li, Mayor Yang, Foreign Affairs Directors from Liaoning, Jilin, and Heilongjiang, fellow Consuls General, friends:

It is a great honor to be surrounded by so many of you today as we gather here to celebrate America’s 232nd Independence Day.

The Fourth of July is traditionally a day of togetherness, when Americans gather with family, friends and neighbors in homes and in parks, in backyards and in public squares.  On this day it is traditional to have a barbeque outside, perhaps attend a parade, toss a ball with the children and then watch some fireworks.  Today I can't offer you fireworks, but I can offer you plenty of great company and fine food to enjoy—samples of American culture and cuisine at their best. >>Full text

Remarks by Ambassador Alan F. Holmer at Liaoning University

When I became Special Envoy for China and the Strategic Economic Dialogue in February of this year, Vice Premier Wu Yi encouraged me to visit the parts of China beyond Beijing and Shanghai.  I happily followed her advice.  During this year, I have been privileged to visit Shenyang, Qinghai, Xian, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hong Kong.  My trips have included several visits to rural villages to see the depths of the challenges you face in promoting balanced, harmonious growth. << (complete text)
