Warden Message regarding recent incidents of violence in Xinjiang

This Warden Message is to inform Americans of reports in the official Chinese media of recent incidents of violence in China's far western Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region and to advise that Americans should carefully consider plans to travel to this area.

The Chinese state-owned news agency Xinhua has carried reports of three attacks directed at Chinese security forces in Xinjiang in the last two weeks. Xinhua reported that three security staff members were killed and another injured on August 12 in an attack at a checkpoint near Kashgar in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.  According to Xinhua, the checkpoint is located 30 kilometers from Kashgar, where an earlier raid on border police left 16 policemen dead and another 16 injured on August 4.  Xinhua also reported an attack in which explosives were detonated in Kuqa (located between Urumqi and Kashgar) on August 10.

The Embassy has no information that this violence is directed at U.S. citizens.  However, U.S. citizens are advised to use caution if traveling to these areas.

For the latest security information, Americans living and traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs Internet web site at http://travel.state.gov, where the current Worldwide Caution, Public Announcements, and Travel Warnings can be found.  Up-to-date information on security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll free in the U.S. or Canada, or, for callers outside the U.S. and Canada, a regular toll line at 1-317-472-2328.  These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).

The U.S. Embassy can be reached 24 hours per day at 86-10-6532-3431. The addresses and telephone contact information for the U.S. Embassy and Consulates are at the bottom of this announcement.
