The Political/Economic Section
The Political Section supports the Consulate Mission by providing reporting on a variety of subjects, from human rights to political changes in the leadership. The section also supports visiting U.S. government delegations and maintains contacts with a variety of Chinese government organizations.
The Economic Affairs Section is responsible for monitoring economic, trade and investment trends in Northeast China and managing U.S.-China economic relations as well as environmental science, technology and health. The Economic Affairs Section also performs extensive analysis on trade and investment policies in the region and remains in contact with the Northeast economic bureaucracy, businesses, academia and media to assist formulate bilateral economic policies.
Since the implementation of the “Northeast Revitalization” program in 2003, the Economic Officer has focused on reporting on economic reforms and restructuring in the Northeast including the following: Shenyang’s efforts to construct a central financial and commercial corridor, the development of ocean port facilities in Northeast China, the modernization of Liaoning’s steel production, the Northeast’s social security programs, and the mechanization of agriculture. An additional key focus is an environmentally friendly housing.
